CHAPTER SEVEN
The Rescue
Captain Blue swung himself aboard the space glider and worked his way round it to the service gallery of the satellite.
Inside his helmet, sweat was trickling down his face, for the temperature-stabilizer of the space ship had been severely taxed during that short drift through space from XL19 to Omega. But now he was in the shadow of the satellite, screened from the searing heat of the sun, the suitâs temperature returned to normal.
He reported to Captain Gunter.
âThereâs no one in the SPG, but Omegaâs hatch is open. Iâm going in, skipper. Iâll keep the lifeline attachedâjust in case of accidents.â
âOkay, captain! Watch your step.â
Captain Blue stepped on to the gallery and cautiously entered the hatch, flashing his vapour torch before him.
He knew where the engine room was located, and made his way there along the narrow corridor. The door of the engine room was wide open, and he caught his breath when, in the light of his torch, he saw a figure in a white space suit lying crumpled just inside, a space pistol clenched in his gauntlet-covered hand.
Captain Blue bent down, turned him over, and saw that the face behind the helmetâs visor was Watermanâs.
âPoor devil,â he muttered.
A low moan sounded in his earphones and he shone his torch into the darkness of the engine room.
The beamless light touched on another space-suited figure sprawled below the control bank of the atomic motors.
âPaul!â he gasped.
He knelt down beside his friend. Through the helmet. Scarletâs handsome face was deathly white. His eyes were closed, but his bloodless lips were moving as though he were trying to mutter something.
And then, over the helmet intercom, Captain Blue caught the faint words, âWaterman wasâwas Mysteron . . . Captain Black ... Waterman was..
The words trailed away.
Captain Blue examined Scarletâs space-suit. There was no sign of damage, but he knew these suits were instantly self-sealing, to protect their wearers from the disastrous effects of accidental damage in space.
He remembered the gun in the dead hand of Waterman. Had the Mysteronised mechanic shot Scarlet before he was killed?
âGunter to Captain Blue!â said a voice in his earphones. âAre you okay?â
âYeah. But Watermanâs dead and Scarletâs out cold, wounded maybe. Canât check without taking off his spacesuit. Iâm bringing him back.â
âOkay. Iâll drift behind the satellite to make it easier for you, pal.â
âThanks!â
Captain Blue got to his feet and was about to lift up Scarlet when he froze, his skin crawling.
He had a feeling he was not alone.
Drawing his Mysteron gun, he flashed his torch towards the door, half expecting to see Waterman on his feet. But the Mysteronised mechanic lay where he had died.
Captain Blue was about to turn back to Scarlet when his scalp tingled. The door of the engine room was sliding shut! With a hoarse cry, he jerked himself into action, diving for the narrowing gap, meaning to wedge it open with his body.
But it was too late. Soundlessly the doorâs knife-edge clamped home into its sealing groove, severing the tough nylon lifeline as if it had been cotton.
